The UEFA European Championship, commonly referred to as the European Championship or simply Euro, is the premier national team football tournament in Europe. Organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), it is held every four years since its inception in 1960. The tournament begins with the group stage, where the participating teams are divided into groups. The knockout stage consists of singleelimination matches. The winners of each match progress to the next round, while the losers are eliminated from the tournament. The knockout stage includes the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final match.

Additionally, there is a match for third place played between the losing semifinalists. This match determines the thirdplace finisher in the tournament.

Teams advance in the UEFA European Championship based on the following criteria:

• Points: In the group stage, teams earn points for their performance in matches. The teams with the highest number of points in each group advance to the knockout stage.
• Goal Difference: If two or more teams have the same number of points in the group stage, their ranking is determined by goal difference (the difference between goals scored and goals conceded).

• Goals Scored: If teams are still tied after goal difference, the number of goals scored in all group matches is considered.
• HeadtoHead Record: If teams are still tied after considering the above criteria, their headtohead record in group matches is used to determine their ranking.
• Fair Play Ranking: If teams are still tied, fair play conduct (based on yellow and red cards) in all group matches is considered.
• Drawing of Lots: As a last resort, if teams are still tied, a drawing of lots by the UEFA administration may be used to determine the final standings.
